A group chant in the back room. Espresso
machines hiss
in the main. The chanters clap. I may
know the words but I drink
the standard drip black
up here with coffee
jerks. I was no mixologist. Sometimes
it still hurts to mingle.

I really like the placement and economy of words in this poem and the lines “I was no mixologist. Sometimes / it still hurts to mingle.”

I like the imagery. Would you consider the word barista (from the Italian for “bartender”) instead of mixologist? Barista is commonly used in the coffee world but mixologist works as well…nice stuff

Thanks for checking out my blog. Think I’ll stick with mixologist (although I am only served by baristas these days).
